Biography & Professional Path

Ruben Hovhannisyan was born in Yerevan to a family of a doctor and an orientalist. He graduated from Yerevan State Medical University in 1994 and in the same year began his residency in Urology at the National Institute of Health, based in the Urological Clinic of the Mikaelyan Institute of Surgery. He completed his specialization in October 1997, and in 1998, he joined the 8th City Hospital as the Head of the Urological Service.

Three years later, by invitation of the management of Arabkir Medical Center, he moved there, where he founded and led the adult urological service for 10 years. Before becoming the Head of the Laparoscopic, Oncological, and Female Urology Clinic at Slavmed Medical Center in January 2016, Dr. Hovhannisyan also worked at Shengavit Medical Center, where he founded the Center for Laparoscopic Urology.

Today, Ruben Hovhannisyan works at Nairi Medical Center as the Head of the Laser, Laparoscopic, and Oncological Urology Service. He is one of the most recognized urologists in the country. His urological team is constantly developing, increasing the types and volumes of surgeries, and performing unique urological interventions. The team of like-minded professionals he created ensures the highest quality of urological services, which is why patients from all over the world come here to solve their urological problems.

Scientific Activity & Innovations

Over the years since the beginning of his career, he has defended his PhD thesis on the early detection of prostate cancer and has repeatedly worked and specialized in the best clinics in the United States and Europe, such as the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA.

He became one of the pioneers in introducing the most complex oncological urological surgery in Armenia—radical prostatectomy, which is performed for the complete cure of prostate cancer. Since 2006, Dr. Hovhannisyan's team has been one of the pioneers of laparoscopic urology in Armenia. This method has become part of the team's daily routine and the predominant approach for kidney surgeries.

Dr. Hovhannisyan has been the Scientific Secretary and the Head of the International Relations Office of the Armenian Urological Association since its foundation in 1999.
